Skippy: Hormel Foods Issues Recall for Select Peanut Butter Products Due to Metal Shavings Risk

The recall involves 153 cases of Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter in 16.3 ounce jars within Georgia, Virginia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Delaware and Arkansas.

The company that produces Skippy peanut butter is recalling more than 150 cases of peanut butter that could contain metal shavings, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

Hormel Foods Sales LLC issued the voluntary recall Friday, sparked by the discovery of metal pieces found during routine cleaning of equipment, the FDA said.

The company is recalling 153 cases – or 1,871 pounds – of Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter Spread sold at Publix, Target and Wal-Mart stores in Georgia, Virginia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Delaware and Arkansas, according to the FDA.

Affected jars are 16.3 ounces and marked with a best-by date of EC1416LR1 and a UPC code of 37600-10500.

If ingested, objects longer than 7mm can cause severe choking, gastrointestinal perforation and infection, the FDA said. No injuries had been linked to the peanut butter as of Friday afternoon.
